The global base station market grew by 38.4% in units in 2009, according to the latest report from EJL Wireless Research titled “Global BTS Transceiver Market Analysis and Forecast, 6hEdition, 2009-2014.”

“Led by China’s 3G deployments, the base station market continued to show strong unit growth in 2009 despite the continued global financial crisis,” says founder and President, Earl Lum. The report provides a unique perspective on the global shipments and demand for base station equipment covering all air interface standards and frequencies (except WiMAX) and major OEMs including Alcatel-Lucent, Ericsson, Huawei Technologies, Motorola, Nokia Siemens Networks, Nortel Networks, and ZTE.

“Huawei Technologies and ZTE posted another strong year shipment growth due to domestic Chinese operator demand for 3G equipment. Chinese OEM market share is now 50% overall compared with 39% in 2008 ,” says Lum. The overall market is expected to grow in the low single digits from 2010 through 2012 as India 3G drives W-CDMA shipments. GSM shipments continue to represent the majority of the overall market demand in the forecast and was flat for the year. We forecast that W-CDMA shipments will surpass GSM shipments in 2010 and that LTE shipments will become the largest segment by 2013.
