Verizon Wireless is moving to “friendly user trials” of LTE in five unnamed cities.

“Technical trials are staged [and] tiered in accordance with industry standards. They’re [now] completed,” said David Clevenger, executive director of public affairs at Verizon Wireless, according to ZDNet. Verizon made the announcement last week in a conference call with hardware and software partners.

Verizon Wireless’ 4G LTE trials in Boston and Seattle indicate the network is capable of average data rates of 5 to 12 megabits per second (Mbps) on the downlink and 2 to 5 Mbps on the uplink.

Verizon’s  LTE rollout is on track to commercially launch its LTE 4G network in 25 to 30 markets in 2010, covering 100 million people.
