August 20, 2009 | Motorola, Inc. (NYSE: MOT) will help develop and implement KDDI’s Long Term Evolution (LTE) network, including RAN/base stations, in Japan. As initially announced on Motorola’s second quarter earnings call, Motorola’s Home & Networks Mobility business will provide the optimal LTE solution to enable KDDI to offer high-speed mobile broadband services, such as video and social networking, to its customers across Japan.

KDDI and Motorola have been building networks together in Japan for 20 years, introducing Japan’s first CDMA network and many other technical advancements. Now, continuing a long history of innovation, Motorola and KDDI will bring an LTE network to Japan and deliver personal media experiences that consumers desire at anytime and anywhere.

KDDI will deploy its LTE network in both 1.5GHz and 800MHz bands to maximize the effective use of these frequencies. The company intends to offer commercial LTE services by December 2012 following a series of trials scheduled to begin in mid 2010.

“We are honored to be selected by our long-time customer KDDI to team with them in developing an innovative solution for their networking needs,” said Bruce Brda, senior vice president and general manager, Motorola Wireless Networks. “Motorola is committed to bringing LTE to the market and delivering flexible solutions that help customers like KDDI accelerate the delivery of next-generation wireless access services in the most cost-effective manner possible.”

Motorola’s Wireless Networks business is making steady progress in securing trials and commitments for LTE networks from operators around the world. Earlier this year, Motorola launched its LTE trial network and testing lab in Swindon, UK.
