VoLTE – 4G’s Next Big Test

Global LTE deployments are continuing to rise and the technology is gaining ever more market recognition. However, LTE currently possesses a key limitation that the industry is actively looking to resolve – the issue of voice. As it stands, LTE networks can only support data and are incapable of handling voice calls.

MetroPCS Launches VoLTE-Capable LTE Smartphone

U.S. carrier MetroPCS has announced commercial launch of Voice over LTE (VoLTE) services and availability of VoLTE-capable handsets. MetroPCS is selling the new VoLTE-capable LG Connect 4G Android smartphone at select U.S. stores and will continue to roll out VoLTE services and phones in the coming weeks.

SK Telecom Launches Voice over LTE Service

South Korean service provider SK Telecom has launched HD voice call service over LTE. According to the company, HD voice call connection time is less than 0.25 to 2.5 seconds, 2 to 20 times shorter than 3G voice calls that require an average of 5 seconds to connect a call.

Ericsson and Qualcomm Demonstrate SRVCC Voice Handover between LTE and WCDMA

Ericsson together with Qualcomm successfully performed a voice handover based on the 3GPP-standardized functionality Single Radio Voice Call Continuity (SRVCC) demonstrating users will experience seamless voice services when they move out of LTE coverage, since the call will automatically be handed over to WCDMA or GSM access during the call.
