LTE Deployments to Cover 57% Population by 2018
A recent ABI Research report expects LTE deployments to deliver population coverage of 57% (4.2 billion) by 2018 while legacy WCDMA and CDMA2000 to cover 31% (2.3 billion). Out of 470 LTE commitments tracked by the company, 193 have gone commercial.
AT&T to Acquire Leap Wireless in $1.2 Billion
AT&T and Leap Wireless have entered into an agreement for AT&T to acquire Leap in $1.2 billion. Leap’s network covers approximately 96 million people in 35 U.S. states. Under the Cricket brand, Leap currently operates a 3G CDMA network, as well as a 4G LTE network covering 21 million people in these areas.
Optus Expands LTE Coverage, Announces Additional Markets
Australian operator Optus has launched LTE network in Wollongong. Optus has switched on LTE at five mobile sites in central Wollongong, kicking off a series of extensive network upgrades and expansions in the greater Illawarra area in the coming six months, which will also include upgrades to the Optus 3G network.
