Verizon Wireless, which is ready to roll out LTE network some time in November, is trying to get the FCC approval to allow them to buy more spectrum so that they can cover the state of Alaska. Verizon won a giant chunk (22 MHz total) from the 700 MHz spectrum auction that took place in 2008,
Verizon has filed an application with the FCC to purchase a block of wireless spectrum from Triad. Triad, the current owner of the spectrum, paid $1.8 billion in 2008.
If Verizon gets this license then it will complete Verizon’s nationwide 700 MHz footprint and can claim complete 4G coverage across entire United States.
Verizon Wireless is expected to commercially launch its LTE 4G network in 25 to 30 markets in 2010, covering 100 million people. By 2013 Verizon’s LTE coverage map will match it’s current 3G coverage map. The company will continue adding LTE coverage in 2014, which is when the carrier is expected to complete the nationwide deployment.
